Es un impulso natural e instintivo que todos experimentamos en algún momento de nuestras vidas. Sin embargo, el deseo no siempre está dirigido hacia objetos o personas reales; también podemos desear cosas abstractas como el poder, la fama o el éxito.

La necesidad es el segundo elemento de la definición del amor según Sócrates. La necesidad es lo que nos hace sentir vulnerable ante aquello o aquellos a los que amamos. Necesitamos del otro para completarnos y darnos seguridad; sin él, nos sentimos incompletos e inseguros. De hecho, muchas veces confundimos el amor con la dependencia, pero estas dos cosas no son lo mismo: podemos depender de alguien sin amarlo (por ejemplo, si dependemos de él para satisfacer nuestras necesidades básicas) y podemos amar sin depender (por ejemplo, si tenemos un fuerte vínculo con nuestros hijos o con nuestros amigos).
